Now that the news has spread like wildfire, Ubisoft is finally issuing a response and it is predictably vague. So vague that I am inclined to believe their statement doesn’t hold much water or truth.  Is it possible some aspect of the game is missing? Sure. Is it likely? No, not given how Ubisoft designed Silent Hunter V, meaning it’s not an MMO and it’s world doesn’t exist on a 3rd-party server. If Ubisoft really wants to defeat piracy, may I suggest that your next game be called Silent Hunter Online? Problem solved.

Also know that Ubisoft basically admitted this was possible only one week ago in an interview with PC Gamer, Ubisoft was asked what would happen in the future if Ubisoft took the servers down; how would players be able to continue playing the game?

Response: “If for some reason, and this is not in the plan, but if for some reason all of the servers someday go away, then we can release a patch so that the game can be played in single-player without an online connection. But that’s if all of the servers are gone.”

Translation: If a patch can be made in the future…a patch can be made right now, by hackers.

Here’s Ubisoft’s “please believe us” statement:

“You have probably seen rumors on the web that Assassin’s Creed II and Silent Hunter 5 have been cracked. Please know that this rumor is false and while a pirated version may seem to be complete at start up, any gamer who downloads and plays a cracked version will find that their version is not complete.”

Ubisoft made serious waves when they announced a new DRM policy for all new PC titles, beginning with Silent Hunter 5 and Assassin’s Creed 2. The new scheme UbiSoft hoped would thwart piracy requires all legitimate users to have a permanent Internet connection that continuously authenticates a copy of the game. Additionally, save game files are now stored on UbiSoft servers. This new system has angered long-time fans who are rightfully pissed off that this new procedure will undermine the integrity of their game, i.e., lose Internet connection and you can’t play the game, or Ubisoft servers take a hike and you’re left holding your dick.

Well, Ubisoft’s master plan has collapsed in under 24-hours, as infamous cracker group Skid-Row has tackled the new DRM and rendered it useless, meaning the only people now suffering with this ridiculous DRM are legitimate owners.

I do not pirate games and rarely by used games but, I'm happy ubisoft draconian anti-consumer drm has been cracked. This proves like gun restrictions that you can't stop criminal activity only restrict the legitimate user. So why then should I or anyone else be an ubisoft customer? They need to realize that its more important to build a relationship with the customer. If we like your company, if we like your game, we will buy a legitimate copy.Treating legitimate users as potential pirates turns us off. I am one person, I won't pirate assassins creed II or any other ubisoft game that uses this kind of restrictive drm but, I also will not buy any games that do. It's my hope that pirates circumvent all anti-consumer approaches ubsioft and any other game publisher implement.

LMAO...... Ive been burned WAY too many times by software companies in the past to care anymore.. DRM.. Shoddy Programing.. Games that are not even finished.. Etc..Listen up Ubisoft and anyone else making games.. You want my money? Produce and SUPPORT decent products... THE SUPPORT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF IT !!!!!!You know why so many people crack etc? Its because the CRACKED versions don't have your stupid DRM crap in it. Wake up.. People are trying to tell you something and your not listening. Just a FYI also.. There is a good portion of pirates who would never have bought your game anyways. You claim this as a lost sale.. But in reality you would NEVER have gotten that sale anyways. In reality people who pirate do it for many reasons .. One of those reasons is to see if the game is any good. (demo's are NOT a good example of a game)The public has spoken .. Are you going to listen? Or are you going to continue loosing money buy keeping up with the ever increasing stupid DRM?

this is not the first time ubisoft has pulled this crap, back in the day when i bought prince of persia the 2 thrones, their active protection was a program called starforce, and all this program did was hurt the people who actually bought the game, this program was so bad that it actually corrupted the computer u installed the game on. so wtf ubisoft?

I was going to buy Silent Hunter 5, seeing as I've bought all the others, but you know I'd rather not be treated as a pirate so might aswell just pirate it and get round the stupid DRM.

Internet. Heroes.Honestly, do these companies think that *any* DRM will survive ingenuity like this? All they're doing is making pirates more determined to break it, and pushing informed users away from legitimate copies.

I'm really happy for this. I too, like the poster Matt, would crack my game if I bought a real copy.I'm not a pirate either, but I've already done this with one game that I bought from steam. I reason that I paid for the game, so I want it on my own terms. If someone stands against this, answer me: who loses? The company? They already got my money. Me? I definately am winning since I get what I want.DRM should die a swift death.

Back in the 90s, long before the big market chains started selling computergames, I ran a games shop. I worked my arse and my health into the ground to sell the games of Ubisoft and all the other companies. Then the big chains started selling games too. And how did the game companies support small shops like mine with employees that actually knew the stuff they sold, could give customers support and all that? Why, by selling the stuff to the big market chains much cheaper of course, so one gamer-shop after the other had to close down, cause we couldn't afford running a price-war, and the customers of course only came to us for the support now, having bought the games where they were cheaper...I'm not even mentioning the draconian contracts you had to sign, agreeing to sell specific games not before a certain release date (even if delivered earlier), just to see your (ex-) customers walk out of a supermarket with those games *before* that date...In mid 1999 I closed my shop, flushing about 100.000 Euros down the drain. When I see how the game companies today treat their end customers and how those - imho rightfully - react I can't help laughing.A lot.Ubisoft, EA or whoever else: Fuck you, fuck you right in the ear! :D

I have a much simpler solution. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE, PIRATE, COPY, OR EVEN CONSIDER PURCHASING A UBISOFT GAME EVER AGAIN.I no longer am a customer in any sense to EA GAMES, UBISOFT, ACTIVISION, ATARI, and SONY thanks to their desire to enslave me when I decided to purchase their products. When they pull this DRM crap, they lose a customer for life with all the money that the customer would spend on their products. They can pull their DRM crap all they want when they are penniless and begging for spare change on the sidewalk.

Guys it's not totaly Cracked. get exited but not to much, through some trusted sources (and unfortunatly i am going to by this game even with it's terrible DRM sorry! don't hate me i just love Silent Hunter series)it's been cracked in the sense no internet needed, and you can play with out contact to server. but here comes the punch, not only are your save games stored online with them (although this has been worked around) the game when sold in the box or as digital download is not complete. ie some goes for pirated version. unless they find out what the files are and play the whole game thru to intercept them, save them and force the game to find them on the hard drive rather than ubi's servers. They have left out several important files from the game that u must contact there server to get. at least this is true with SH:V.so pirate you want you only going to get a demos worth of game play out of it!! which i think is good. cause i see posts all the time of pirates saying "i download to try before i buy" and whilst this concept is good. majority of people who say this are lieing. and if there not, this DRM will surly give u enough time to make ure decision. then u can decide to spend ure money or not, or just boycott due to DRM, up to you i guess. me, i want to a part of the wolf pack, and if that costs me $80 AUD then so be it. my connections always on anyways.

who cares about ubisoft's response? if they really believe that somebody is "stealing" from them, their only possible response is "we're working with law enforcement to rectify the situation". the game is out, and you can download and play it, what can they say? "no you can't"? the only reason to care about their response is for the comedic value

I sympathize with Ubisoft. They're in a no-win situation. They spend lots of money to create a game and then watch as significant portions of the playing population choose to download the game and play it illegally. If you're unhappy with the purchase price, don't buy it! My old roommate always proferred the argument "I wouldn't have ever paid anyway, so they're not really losing any money." I thought this argument, which seems to be a common thought for all pirates, conveys an unbelievable amount of entitlement. The only point at which anybody is entitled to play a game is when they have paid for a license to play. No matter how glamorous this community might consider those who crack DRM, such individuals are simply enabling and perpetuating illegal activity, plain and simple. Ubisoft's attempt to employ DRM, however misguided, is just an attempt to secure what they are rightfully owed.

Dan said, "Ubisoft's attempt to employ DRM, however misguided, is just an attempt to secure what they are rightfully owed."Dan, please realize that while Ubisoft may be fully entitled to this to their own software you must understand that Ubisoft needs to be more competitive. Corporations now days think that they are obligated to get 'x'-amount of dollars from a particular product. The 'suits' at the top tell the project managers, "I want to see 'x' amount of dollars from this and you budget is x-y." The problem is that the budget is too small and the willingness to support the product after release is nearly none. These companies do NOT deserve to have their game paid for if they are going to play screw their customers out of every last dime they paid for simply because "it's not in [their] best interest to continue to support [the game]."What the people posting to this article are trying to relay is not related to their entitlement to the product, but their entitlement to the product AFTER it has been released. An eye for an eye, so to speak.

DRM isn't a problem, DRM is just fine. Look at Steam. The thing that Valve has that Ubisoft doesn't? Connection to their customers. Valve >>>>>>>>> Ubisoft, even though both use DRM. Some Steam games require you to be online to play the singleplayer. How come nobody has complained about this? Oh yeah, because Valve is godlike and is on a level with their customers.

Frankly I'm happy I was wrong. That the DRM system has been eliminated so quickly will sadly mean that things will get worse for legitimate customers, but for now people still have the option of playing the game untouched, or relying on the "black-hats" who have given them the courtesy to save locally and play offline that the publisher denied them.

@Del: You're missing something. While Valve does have better support, better customer/community involvement, and better quality games. They also realize that Steam won't be online all the time. That's why they've included a nice little feature called OFFLINE MODE. You need only install and start the game up once in order to activate it and boom, you can play online whenever you want. Now, I'm sure others have had trouble with offline mode, I haven't, but it's nice to know that if my internet goes out, or I go on a trip or something, I can play my games without being tethered online.Oh yeah, "Valve is godlike and is on a level with their customers." <- The truth.

I wonder who made the decision with this DRM. Do they not live in the real world? It's such elementary common sense that DRM is bad for business because it pisses off legitimate customers. Having a crack in UNDER 24 hours is a total and complete joke and makes Ubisoft look like such moronic idiots. If I owned a brick-n-mortar store selling some widget, it would be very bad for business if I treated everyone that walked in the door as a potential thief by requiring them to be searched when they left. Ubisoft is so immensely stupid because they are doing that analogous thing. If they quite simply created cool games, there are more than enough people that would be happy to pay for the game legitimately. Sure, there will always be pirates just like there will always be shoplifters, but stores simply can't go around treating everyone like a criminal because if they did, they wouldn't last as a business. I hope to God Ubisoft gets a clue that even a 4 year old can understand and get rid of this DRM crapola. If they don't, I hope they eventually go out of business. I refuse to buy anything at all from this stupid, moronic company because I don't want to be punished for something someone else does. Do these MORONS think that they're the only game company in the world? Are they that arrogant and have delusions of deity? For God's sake, I'd like to think that most people are honest, hard-working, and legit rather than making the assumption most people are not!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This moronic company is so insulting to me it's like someone taking a crap on me. These people all need to just go play in traffic.

While I'm thrilled to see the primary aspect of this 'DRM' quickly and effectively bypassed, I actually believe that Ubisofts spin has a touch of truth to it. We've seen several situations with cracked games where disabling the DRM system caused errors within the game itself. Lets wait a couple days and watch the support forums for Ubisoft before we start too much back patting. Personally I find it truly hilarious when pirates go to the official for support with bug caused by bypassing DRM.Just don't buy the shit if you feel that their DRM choices are excessive and unreasonable.

I mean come on even if it did work on dial up and you like 2 hours into the game and then BOOM it goes out because I'm sure a lot of you know how reliable dial up is. I love this Ubisoft/DRM/patent application discussion. There are different ways of preventing software piracy, including the one applied for below. No points for guessing why I love writing about it. It is effective antipiracy without the overreaching DRM.Patent title: PREVENTION OF SOFTWARE PIRACY USING UNIQUE INTERNAL INTELLIGENCE WITH EVERY SOFTWARE APPLICATION COPY USPTO Application Number 11678137Basically, each and every copy of a protected program gets it's own internal intelligence, interpretable only by itself, which includes time of program creation, etc., etc.. Each copy of the program gets compiled or otherwise created at the time of purchase so that it can incorporate the unique intelligence. The maker simply keeps track of each set of special information in case the user emails in that he needs to reinstall. Perhaps even the purchasers name would be encrypted and included as part of the intelligence. The number of permissible occurrences of requests for new key codes, say, 5 times, can be controlled by the program maker. If a pirate cracks the code for that single copy of the program, still, it will work only for that copy, and only installable in the time frame that the internal intelligence says it can be installed. The upshot is that program maker gets money, the purchaser can own it, install on more than one computer in his home, again within a day or so, and new key codes can be obtained in case of needed reinstalls, a reasonable amount of times.

Carper, this is how you should have said it "IN MY OPINION the pc games industry will be dead soon". There's no need to be rude to a whole bunch of people. In real life, would you walk into a into a crowd of people and tell them they're stupid? Respect someone else's opinion, never think you're right without a doubt.

In this case, I'm all for the pirates. This is retarded DRM. I have an internet connection that's on all the time but what happens when Comcast takes a shit and I can't connect? Guess what people do when they can't surf the fucking net? THEY PLAY GAMES THAT ARE INSTALLED ON THEIR HARD DRIVES!!! What was Ubi thinking with this one?The fucked up part is that shit like this encourages pirating and is going to kill the PC gaming scene. Its bad enough that people are being dumbed down with stupid console FPSs. The PC is where its at because of the real games and sims. DRM=piracy=death of pc gaming. I haven't bought a game in a brick and mortar store in ages. Steam is just fine for me and I've purchased many digital titles. Wake up devs.

To Baconmushroommelt. Yes i probably would. The pc games industry is dying and thats FACT. Its harder for console players to play cracked copys etc so who do you think the games manufacturers will be releasing and putting more of there time and money into. Its IW aswell . There all jumping on the bandwagon and making games for consoles and then porting them pc . Take MW2 for instance"To sum it upWe thought the lack of dedicated servers was bad, but now we can add the lack of console commands, the inability to have a say in who hosts the game, a lengthy pause while the game migrates to a new host if the currently selected host quits, no leaning, no option to record matches, and no way to kick or block trouble players, hackers, or cheaters. You have to wonder if there are any actual PC gamers working at Infinity Ward, as it will be a challenge to find any member of the PC gaming community that will stand up for any of these omissions, not to mention all of them bundled together. At launch, this will be one of the most locked-down, inflexible, and gamer-unfriendly game ever created."and mw2 was supposed to be the best game of all time. Can people not remember cod4 and the ability to do what you wanty and control the game how you liked.Get used to this people

I recently bought Battlefield Bad Company 2. After installing it asked me to choose either continue using the dvd each time playing or activate the game once and the dvd is not required for playing. I activated it online and now I'm playing a legitimate AAA game while the DVD is safe in it's box. I AM HAPPY.I ordered DCS Blackshark the other day but it was discontinued and the shop asked me to replace it with another game. Browsing through their website, some of the latest titles were Assassin's Creed 2 and Silent Hunter 5 and if I wait for another couple of days, Splinter Cell Conviction. All of them are games are I wanted to play but I've read about the new DRM so didn't pick any of them. Silent Hunter is one of my favourite franchises and I had to buy Aliens VS Predator over it. I AM SAD.

Is Carper a troll or a shill? They claimed the PC gaming was dead before Bioware came out with Baldur's Gate. When they cancel Mass Effect 3 I will start listening to idiots blaming pirating for the abominable actions of some game publishers and hold a wake for PC gaming. B&M stores not carrying PC titles is why B&M stores don't carry PC titles. So PC game makers switched to more direct marketingCLICK and you have your game. Which is what most lazy ass people want. :) I prefer a nice solid disk I can make copies of and store the originals for backup to play again in 10 years.Don't own a single console. Never have probably never will.

@Carper The reason why PC games aren't found in stores anymore, is simply because people buy them online now, and comparing PC to a PSP or a DS collection at the store is stupid. Handheld games are the most prevalent in gaming today.

Now all we need is an open source gui installer. It would not be that hard, and I say open source because with if you create an open source program, it will only die if everyone loses interest, including the developers. And I tell ya, something that install an anti-drm is not going to die.

Crackers to create a virtual server that supports OFFLINE PLAY..]]using a crack that is currently available does not support to load a mission... The mission does not load by downloading content from the internet connection available, but it get link where and which to load from the connection..So cracking needs to be effective such that a virtual server that is able to support all the things without internet connection....To the UBISOFT:: DRM WILL BE GOING DOWN EVEN IF THEY FIX IT.... SO PLZ STOP DRM ANDGIVE OFFLINE SUPPORT FOR GAMERS WHO CANNOT HAVE INTERNET CONNECTION IN A LAPTOP WHEN THEY ARE IN A CAR..UBISOFT DONT SPOIL YOUR NAME IN THE PC GAMING.... SUPPORT GAMING BY REMOVING DRM ... AND PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR OFFLINE GAME.....DONT EVER IMPLEMENT DRM IN YOUR FUTURE GAMES ALSO....

That asshole company will not able to make a game again for next year, I pray!.. Coz' they don't have enough money after fooling many customer in the world = bankrupt.. I honestly always respect all game company works, masterpiece, and also their staff and his/her families, with purchasing a legal game.. But why this Ubisoft don't replied their customers respect?, Are they trully don't realize how many angry customers in this forum, and some other forums? If in the next Splinter Cell release they don't make a difference, let's us take a sit and coffee, then watch their company burned down to the ash with their own fire.

Actually, fyi; it's been fully cracked for quite a while now.I'm playing it myself, all you need it to copy some files and a crack. The only thing left to say is:If I buy a game it's mine, not Ubisoft's. So in relation to the new drm which practically means that the game ain't mine. So, Ubi. Up yours!

If they start to sell the games cheaper like ( 20 € ) i would pay with no dificulty , but paying 50€ it´s alot it´s 10% of the minimum work pay , for a game , to much . and they you see the game sucks ( like spore ) and you play just 10 Hours , it´s fucking mind killing losing that much money wirthout enjoing it . i tank the pirats for not making ous lose so much money .

I think we can all agree that this DRM is one hell of a bumblefuck, however you must understand these guys are dicks and want to have most of their games on consoles it seems like their are more and more console games and less PC games if we arnt careful we will have a whole bunch of unmodifiable games on our hands and we cant have that happen, the real solution is to make ubisoft take it up the ass by not only bypassing their DRM (perhaps with the use of dll files) but to also be an even bigger ass and mess with their servers that they store all this shit on, im not sure who would have the balls to do that but ill be the first to shake their hand.

The number one rule in business is to make a profit, though it should be the second rule with customer care being number one, don't blame the company, you want to blame someone then make it those who support cheap inferior hardware such as consoles, the worst crime in my opinion is people purchasing cheap plastic boxes and settling for inferior graphics, I saved hard for my pc so that I may have both performance [strong]and[/strong] quality, something which a console does [strong]not[/strong] deliver, you get what you pay for, someone once said [strong]"When console's become as good as pc's they will be pc's"[/strong]; a sentiment I fully agree with, so long as people settle for the cheap route then cheap inferior is what you will get, it's my opinion the company knew what the reaction would be to this DRM, it was a gamble to force more people over to consoles, for me, when they stop making games for pc, that's when I will stop purchasing games.
