The Ultimate Battlefield Bad Company 2 Multiplayer Strategy Guide: Part I

Part II is Now Available Here

I write this guide not for your benefit but my own. You see, I am tired of playing with teammates who treat a round of Bad Company 2 (BC2) like it’s Halo or Modern Warfare 2. An overwhelming amount of players just don’t seem to grasp the fundamentals; how to score, how to win, how not to suck, how not to play like a lone wolf who doesn’t contribute anything except a few useless sniper-rifle kills.

Not to brag, but I consistently rule at Battlefield games and have since the genre originally debuted back on the PC with Battlefield 1942. I play like a man on a mission with clear goals and objectives, a style that usually finds my score high enough to lead the team. It’s not because I wield l33t weapon skills, it’s because I play the game as it is intended. Hopefully, by the end of this guide, you’ll be playing in a similar style and I won’t have to curse my team for being top-heavy with noobs.

1. Objective Based, Not Kill-Based

Contrary to how a lot of people play Battlefield, killing members of the other team is NOT your objective. Killing other players is a fringe-benefit of completing objectives.

Your overall objective is to destroy targets dotted across the map, usually two crates in each zone. These crates represent your holy crusade. If you’re on the attacking team, every thing you do as a player should be geared towards taking down a crate. Any activity not related to taking down a crate is a waste of time. If you’re on defense, saving those crates is your prime directive.

Why This is Effective: The entire game is based around destroying or saving crates. Destroy all the crates as the attacking team and you win. Prevent the attacking team from destroying your crates and you win. It’s as simple as that. Winning has nothing to do with how many players you kill, unless you are on defense, where every kill will slowly bring you towards victory, but not at the expense of losing crates.

2. Hey Rambo, Join a Squad!

I was hoping that DICE, the designers of BC2, would make joining a squad mandatory in their latest version of the game, but my hopes and dreams didn’t pan out. It’s too bad, as compulsory squad enlistment would go a long way in forcing players to play properly. As it stands, you have the option to either join a squad or go it alone when loading up a new map.

There is zero reason not to join a squad, nor is there a single benefit to playing solo.

Why This is Effective: Joining a squad allows you to spawn with any living squad-mate currently playing on the map. If you have squadie who has already penetrated enemy lines then you can select him and spawn right next to his location, giving him a much-needed hand. This saves you a ton of time by not forcing you to run or drive from the initial base all the way to the objective. With a full squad of four guys, you’ll usually have three good spawning options, allowing you to appear closer to the action. This ensures you keep the pressure on the opposing team. If you elect to not join a squad, then you will always spawn at a base, costing you valuable time.

Additionally, joining a squad opens up a ton of extra scoring modifiers that will greatly increase your point total.

3. Proper Spawning

A lot of people just button-mash the spawn button until they return to action, giving little thought about where they are appearing or why. If you’re in a squad then you have a lot of options. You can either spawn with a teammate or at your base, depending upon your current needs.

When you die and the time to spawn arrives, analyze the map and see what assets you have available in the form of vehicles or aircraft.  If there is an unused tank at your main base then you should spawn there and use the asset. If the base is empty of assets, then spawn with a member of your squad.

Why This is Effective: One sure way for a team to lose a round of BC2 is by not using all available assets. If your team is not using available tanks, helicopters or UAV, then your team is going to lose. Nothing is more depressing than watching your entire team just go running by all the heavy equipment as they make their long journey towards an enemy position.

If you have a squad-mate in a tank or copter then you can spawn within his vehicle, assuming a position is free. You’ll wrack up extra points working as a unit, plus you’ll be using available assets at their maximum efficiency.

4. Play Your Class

Every class in BC2 has special abilities that can make all the difference between victory or defeat.  Additionally, using these abilities will earn you extra points for faster leveling. If you’re a medic, then you should be dropping med-kits where your teammates are making a stand, plus reviving dead teammates as they go down. If you’re an engineer then you should be using your wrench to fix damaged vehicles. Pay attention to the radar, as icons will appear that indicate what needs doing by your class. If you see a wrench icon, that means a friendly vehicle is in need of repairs.

Why This is Effective: Having an engineer repair a tank while the tank blasts enemy positions is a very effective use of the class. Done properly, a tank can withstand a great number of direct hits. Add a second engineer to the repair process and you’re virtually unstoppable.

5. Use the BACK Button

The BACK button, which is seldom used in games, gets a real workout in BC2. When targeting an enemy or enemy vehicle, you can press the BACK button and essentially call out that target to the rest of the team. This makes the target appear on the map so everyone will see what you are seeing and can begin blasting. Plus, you get a few extra points for calling out targets.

Why This is Effective: It all comes down to situational awareness. The more your team knows about enemy positions, the better.

Much appreciated. Just the info I needed. Having been a team deathmatch player - BC2 is a nice change and challenge from the standard run & gun. Look forward to more tips.

thanks for thew tips. This game is hella tough to get used to after a year of mw. played for over an hour and still dont really know what im doing but im close to getting the paddles for my medic so i can actually contribute a bit. also, it is fucking nice to be able to talk to people, ask advice, etc. and actually get a decent response instead of the usual "lol faggot learn to headshot!"

Thanks for the tips. TIP: The Medic in the Squad should always go from cover to cover and stay 10-30 meters behind the frontal assault. This way the medic will function as a spawn point. :)USE WHEN THE ENEMY BASE IS DAMAGE FREE!TIP 2- RUSH mode: If the MAP has a high rise (high building/mountain etc.) 1 of 4 squads should lay down a base of fire 50-120 meters away from objectiv (not to snipe, but to take out stategic placements and to bombard the area a moment, before a PUSH. Works great for my team. Unit'will write some more.. need more experience on the battlefield :)

Like this guide. Please keep it up. Also, can you tell me where I can find an explanation of how to spot on 360? Also, anywhere you know of lists to get into a regular squad for 360 players, in order to get into parties before launching games? I would wager the whole "getting stuck with a shitty squad" happens even more often on the console versions of game. I rarely even get into a squad where anyone answers me when I try to communicate

thanks dude but next time you explain all this stuff dont assume that everyone is a noob and likes to be a lone wolf, i have played BC2 since the demo and since then i pretty much have done everything on here. i thought it was common sense, very helpful tho to players who dont know. also i think another thing should be that the game was designed so ppl can have "fun" not just to do buisness and crank out levels. so yea if you wanna go in with all medics with tracer darts and make someones face look like a glowing red mass of dots then go ahed, also if your gonna have a squad where 3 out of 4 ppl are sniping then make sure you have either a medic or a assault neerby for ammo and revives.

dude, this was a really helpful guide, even though i too am always the top player. but i have one huge complaint, you ripped on snipers. i gotta admit it's annoying when you have a sniper that's five miles away, but not all are like that. i use the m24 just like any other gun, and to me it works better than any other gun. i get so many amazing headshot kills and yet i still manage to kill the objectives. don't expect to rip on the best and most versatile class in the game and get away with it. 'nuff said.

Some nice tips. However occasionally it helps not to be in a squad, even for the team overall. If you are sniping from a good spot and in a squad, squad mates spawning on you can easily give away your position. Recon are very useful for spotting enemies as well as mortar support. We had one round where most of the attacking team as recon and the defenders were plastered with mortar fire constantly until they had no cover at all. Only two men had to go in on foot to secure the crates.

I have several tips! For the love of christ stop running into the middle of objectives with your pants down. If you're capturing an objective stay out of obvious lines of sight. Park it by a dumpster or in the corner of an empty room with a covering and small windows. There is nothing more frustrating that watching 3 guys hump the flag like it's see you at the pole. They ALWAYS get shanked by the opposing team. You can actually stay fairly distanced from the flag and not be seen by anyone. I cap objectives ALL THE TIME this way. Also, when you finally cap an objective, stick around for a minute or two. Cause you're bound to get a patrolling tank or the enemy strolling back to re-cap.Also, if you're going to fly a helicopter, know the boundaries of the map you're on (an addendum to the original tip about vehicles). I've gotten on a helicopter only to join the pilot in a suicide because he was too much of an idiot to turn around and stay within the map's boundaries. Those are just a couple I've encountered.

Thanks for the info, as will as the tips from some of the others here. I´m an absolute noob in online playing but this game got me hooked. First couple of rounds I couldn´t keep enemies and allies apart. Most things people are complaining about, I do those things! but keep in mind, a lot of people are new at this, or only have about 30 minutes per day to spend on it, so we don´t get to be so good at it... i didn´t know about spotting and thought you had to stay near the pole when capturing. And c4... ow man ow man, gonna use that one.

This is my very first battlefield experience and transitioning from a "team deathmatch" mentality to objective based play is fun, new, exciting, and...difficult. Anyways, I will be getting good at this game and I'd like to find some veterans to squad up with for some non-noobish playtime.XBL: themorningstar1 please feel free to send me an invite

All good advice, though I wouldn't be so quick to assume ALL recon players simply hang out at the back sniping... I consider myself more of an urban sniper, usually around the objectives with my m95 noscoping and knifing, and of course using motion sensors and c4 to my (and my team's) advantage. So just saying, not everyone plays the same way.

I just got into playing BC2 online and you're right. too many guys just playing to shoot and shoot and shoot, and die and die and die. Meaningless action. I'm getting better as I play a little more, and I try hard to play as a team and actually play towards the objective, sticking together with teamates covering each others' asses. A lot of people ruin the game by just playing to shoot and don't even care about the objective. Bro, I should be looking you up to play with.

I read part two before reading part one. In part one, everything seems kosher except in regards to UAV tips. A good UAV should stay low so that it can use building as cover. Even hiding behind a building for 10 seconds will make an average player forget you exist. Moving is good for UAVs but specifically, flying forward and vertically will make you a more elusive target. Roadkilling with UAVs is also something to take advantage of. Taking out helicopters is also pretty easy. To push it to pro-status, I encourage trying to fly through trees and at eye level. You have to be able to fly out of sight quickly, but a UAV can easily move past enemy lines, and is difficult to spot because they are unexpected to be there and the UAV machine gun is pretty decent. Also, there is one advantage of going solo. No one can spawn on you. This is more of making aware of an annoyance rather than a tip, but sometimes I kill my own teammate for this (HC). If you spawn next to a recon sniper who has a good spot, please DO NOT give away his position by shooting away at a few pickings. At least walk away and create some distance so that you can hit the enemy from a different angle.Great tips. I support the anti-Rambo movement.

I dont mind the 2nd gunfire on a tank... I always want the improved armour because if u try it out (especially with a repairman near u) u are hard to destroy if ur not a fully moron...e.g.: u have impr. armour.... enemytank has impr.dmg.... its kinda the same if there are tanks without any improving... but... if u have a repairman near u.... the improved dmg tank goes to hell... u can take a lot dmg while the enemy engineer isnt fast enough to repair his tank

If all players read this it would be a better game. I think I would like this game better than MW2 if people played it right. I've only been playing a couple weeks, & have only been in a couple of squads that worked together. Lets get rid of the RAMBO'S and play. This is a squad based game with straight forward objectives. If you want to be RAMBO play MW2 you'll fit right in. But not here.

This might be a really newbie question but my UAV doesnt seem to have a button that operates this machine gun that I see people killing me with... one thing i REALLY HATE about this game is that if you "spot" someone for your team sometimes you "spot" all the guys near him that actually you couldnt see yourself! I am of the opinion that to make it more interesting the the enemy player wont be spotted unless you press your back button with him IN YOUR SIGHT! i get so annoyed if i am hiding in a bush and my team-mates get spotted and the game lights me up like a beacon! i consider myself to be the best recon player in the game and to get that good you need to use recon when your team-mates are not, stay back but with a LOS (line of sight) on your teams objectives and spot the shit out of everything as well ascontributing protection by picking off the defusers of said objective. also mortars are great for 'cover chopping' love the guide, love your comments, peace out.

Boy you speak the truth don't you? I've only seen good MG, and missile emplacements used by soldiers in ONE SINGLE GAME! That was the most advanced Rush game I ever played; Laguna Innocentas on defense with the enemy pounding us with PT-Boats and Blackhawks our team finally wises up and joins me on the offensive. We manned all those turrets and I actually got ace pin for once (yay for me). Problem with BC2 is to many people are coming off COD: MW2. They think its the same game! Vehicles are just pests and their to dumb for their own good. Me and one good teammate jumped in a Bradley on Panama Canal and we break a full two MBT and Light Tank assault by the enemy! We take out the light tank and he jumps out to repair me. While he repairs I jump out and take out a stolen Abrams with a mortar strike! Then we knock out a T-90 with a BRADLEY! This game is filled with idiots that us smart people feed on.You're guide will hopefully help and I wish you luck.

One other thing: if a squad-mate is flying a UAV, cover his ass in over watch. Any opponents smart enough will either be sniping at, or rushing your position, so cover your team mate while he takes out the enemy assets. Same thing if you are all in a fire base. Be responsible to your team. In conquest, once you are raising your flag, divide up the jobs... one of you is watching the entrance (or the stairs) so the the others can keep up the fire/heat/attention on the invading forces. It is good insurance and good team play. Even though my name hints at recon, I don't play it much, and when I do, its to spot, destroy and cover my team, not rack up noob kills.

this game is garbage, multiplayer is decent, rounds hitting your enemy isnt consistant; as much as 17 rounds to kill someone with a light machine gun, about 2-3 hits with a sniper rifle, about 1/2 a mag with the sub and rifles, and varies with the pistols. no one understands how to set up an overwatch and effectively use their teammates (other than to spawn on) riflemens dont distribute ammo, medics dont want to revive you, snipers never throw out motion sensors, they take out random targets instead of the ones going after the objectives, and rarely use god's gift...UNLIMITED mortar strikes, get 2 or 3 snipers and constantly mortar strike an objective..game over..engineers are probably the least selfish class...
