Universal Studios is entertaining the idea of breathing new life into their Battlestar Galactica license by commissioning a big-budget movie. Project would be produced and possibly directed by Brian Singer, a hit-or-miss director who showed great promise with The Usual Suspects in 1994, delivered a solid comic-book movie with X-Men and X2…then went downhill from there, coughing up a weak Superman reboot with Superman Returns and, most recently, the World War II drama Valkyrie, that came and went without anyone noticing.
If you’re expecting a movie version of Battlestar Galactica to continue the tale we’ve been watching on SciFi (SyFy) over the years, think again. Brian Singer will essentially be rebooting the series and possibly working with the original Battlestar creator, Gary Larson.
Now here’s the deal: Ron Moore’s version of Battlestar Galactica is what the majority of people are familiar with. Most have never heard of, let alone seen, the original series that starred Lorne Greene. We still have at least one television movie coming before the end of the year with The Plan, plus we have a Battlestar spin-off series coming called Caprica. Battlestar lives on.
Why would Universal even bother with going in a completely new direction with Ron Moore’s version still so fresh in our minds? No easy answer, except for the obvious: executive incompetence.
My spider-sense says this project is doomed to failure.
