Road Rash was one of my favorite games on the Sega Genesis, so hearing that it’s making a welcome return pleases me to no end. Road Rash should have been a long-standing franchise like Need for Speed and Test Drive, but for whatever reason, the series went straight into the toilet and hasn’t been heard from in many, many years.

Electronic Arts’ Warrington studio is hoping to revive the motorcycle classic and they’ve released some very early test footage of the game that instill some hope. While most of textures haven’t been placed within the game as of yet, what you see here is gameplay testing. It looks like a lot of fun. Better yet, it looks like Road Rash.

The much maligned Windows Movie Maker is a lot less lame, thanks to a new version emerging from the land of Beta. While it will never really compete with top-shelf editing software like Sony Vegas or Final Cut Pro, it does fill the need of average consumers who just want the basics with some great features thrown in for good measure.

With HD camcorders coming down in price, many consumers are now filming in high resolution but are finding their editing options limited. If, like me, you have a Canon Vixia HD camcorder, then you are fully aware of the challenges in working with the AVCHD format, which hasn’t quite garnered the support it deserves. Sony Vegas supports the format, as does Pinnacle Studio Pro, but Windows Movie Maker will now tackle the duty for those of you looking for a basic program. As an added bonus, Windows Movie Maker has built-in support for YouTube uploads and many new plugins.

Me loves me some high-def trailers, but navigating Apple’s Quicktime site leaves a lot to be desired and don’t even get me started on Yahoo’s attempt. In answer to this dilemma is the newly launched HD-Trailers.net, which hosts of ton of new trailers that are only available in the HD format. Rumors have been building for weeks that Microsoft is poised to announce a new Zune model, though it will take the shape of a “digital entertainment handheld”. Now, photos of the device have been leaked, including photos of the spec-sheet.

We’ve all seen the classic footage of Neil Armstrong descending the lunar ladder and intoning the famous words, “One small step for man…” It’s one of the signature sequences of the 20th-century. Amazingly, new footage has come to light that was taken from a different camera attached to the lunar lander. Unlike the original footage we’ve all seen, this new sequence was filmed with a Maurer 16mm Data Acquisition Camera, essentially an HD 16mm camera…and in color, no less.

n Apollo-11 the DAC was mounted near the window of the lunar module and was initially operated at full speed to record the historic first portion of the EVA by Neil Armstrong. Buzz Aldrin remained in the lunar module to record the EVA and to operate other instruments such as the TV downlink before joining Armstrong on the lunar surface. If you look carefully you can see Buzz Aldrin’s reflection on the window as he works in the lunar module.

After this sequence, the camera was adjusted and slowed down to the 1FPS time laps/stop motion setting which was used to record the entirety of the mission EVA by the two astronauts. Such speed was required to keep the film from running out during the EVA. The camera did not record sound, but the corresponding sound from the radio downlink has been added and synchronized.

Thi s could be considered the first “High definition video” taken on the moon, since the DAC’s film quality meets or exceeds high definition video standards.

Lots of cool space stuff today, so just bear with me. Earlier this week, NASA announced that they’ve completed restoring over one hundred hours of footage from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs that got us to the moon. MSNBC has more on the story:

The HD makeover was performed by the Discovery Channel for “When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions,” a documentary series due to premiere in June.
The archive includes dramatic shots of the first American spacewalk, conducted in 1965 by Gemini 4 astronaut Ed White. If White’s spacesuit failed, there were few options available for rescuing him, Gemini 4 commander James McDivitt recalled.
“We didn’t have a plan. We didn’t have a checklist on how you kill your best friend,” McDivitt told the filmmakers behind “When We Left Earth.”

The best part about all of this? Besides receiving what will surely be a great Discovery Channel special, the entire high definition library will be made available for our viewing pleasure. This news has me itching to watch one of my favorite mini-series, From the Earth to the Moon, all over again. MSNBC has some of the remastered footageavailable to watch, but it’s not streamed in HD. Go figure.
