Here's a Photo of the Alleged Space Alien

So the big, behind-closed doors showing of video footage supposedly depicting an alien has just wrapped up in Colorado. If you missed out on the news, check out my post from yesterday. Some enterprising person in attendance took a snapshot from the video and you can clearly see the puppet, oops, I mean alien, peering over through the window. Case closed!

So what was on the video? Here's what the Denver Post had to say:

A few minutes of grainy, black and white video show a creature with big eyes peeping over a windowsill. But does it show a puppet, or an alien from outer space?

Over the course of three minutes or so, the footage shows a white creature with a balloon-shaped head that keeps popping up and down in a windowsill that was eight feet above the ground. The face was white, with large black eyes that seemed to blink.

About 50 journalists were in the room for the screening, including up to 20 TV cameras. Photographers were not allowed to capture images from the footage today because experts are still reviewing it, Rojas said.

If you've surfed a few major news outlets over the past 24-hours, you've no doubt seen a headline that indicates tomorrow, May 29, will witness the unveiling of a video that supposedly shows an extraterrestrial.

The headline has appeared everywhere from Drudge Report to Huffington Post, no doubt provoking a large amount of people to actually give credence to this tale.  When you actually read the article, you find plenty of information that casts a negative light as to the authenticity of this claim.

Let's take a look.

MIT's Technology Review Roots Against Finding Extraterrestrials

Posted by Chris Jensen | Apr. 29, 2008 06:10AM PST | 189 views | 0 comments

Nick Bostrom of Technology Review, published by MIT, has posted an expansive article about the search for extraterrestrial life in the universe. Unlike most articles on the subject that dole out positive spin, Nick is actually rooting against discovery:

In this scenario, the entire history of humankind to date is a mere instant compared with the eons that still lie before us. All the triumphs and tribulations of the millions of people who have walked the Earth since the ancient civilization of Mesopotamia would be like mere birth pangs in the delivery of a kind of life that hasn't yet begun. For surely it would be the height of naďveté to think that with the transformative technologies already in sight--genetics, nanotechnology, and so on--and with thousands of millennia still ahead of us in which to perfect and apply these technologies and others of which we haven't yet conceived, human nature and the human condition will remain unchanged. Instead, if we survive and prosper, we will presumably develop some kind of posthuman existence.

None of this means that we ought to cancel our plans to have a closer look at Mars. If the Red Planet ever harbored life, we might as well find out about it. It might be bad news, but it would tell us something about our place in the universe, our future technological prospects, the existential risks confronting us, and the possibilities for human transformation--issues of considerable importance.

But in the absence of any such evidence, I conclude that the silence of the night sky is golden, and that in the search for extraterrestrial life, no news is good news.
