Getting Pwned at CoD4 and Halo? You Can Now Blame the Lighting

Posted by Chris Jensen | Apr. 21, 2008 07:44AM PST | 680 views | 0 comments

Well, I can finally stop screaming, "Lag!" into my Xbox 360 headset every time I die, as two scientists in Sweden have released new research that explains the impact of in-game lighting on your psychology.

From the Abstract:

Game players perform best and fastest in a computer game world lit with a warm (reddish) as compared to a cool (bluish) lighting. Red Lighting in a Computer Game also induced the highest levels of pleasantness in game users. It was probably the level of pleasantness induced by the warm lighting that enhanced the players' better performance in that digital game world.

These results are important for game designers and developers of online communities and visual worlds. Nevertheless maybe in the future also for indoor lighting and even depression considering the effects on mood. Wouldn't it be nice when suffering from depression and being treated with computer games three times a day?

In experimental psychology there is some evidence that indoor lighting can have an effect on mood. The influence of indoor lighting on psychological mechanisms is complex. This study was designed to investigate the impact of warm (reddish) and cool (bluish) simulated illumination in digital game worlds on game users' affect and play performance.

Call of Duty 4 Map Pack Generates $10-Million

Posted by Chris Jensen | Apr. 18, 2008 08:30AM PST | 275 views | 0 comments

The recently released map pack for the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 4 has shattered revenue records for Xbox Live, serving up 1-million sales in 9 days for a grand total of $10-million...for 4 freaking maps.

Remember when you played shooters on the PC and simply downloaded maps for free? Yeah, those days are over.

From IGN:

"Infinity Ward is extremely grateful for support from our loyal Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare community around the world," said Robert Bowling, community relations manager at Infinity Ward. "From the beginning, we were committed to do our best and that continues now with the Variety Map Pack. We can't wait to get back online with everyone."

Congratulations to Infinity Ward. Now about the removal of the new map playlists...

30 Things That Suck About Call of Duty 4

First, a disclaimer: I haven't played a better multiplayer first-person shooter since Counter-Strike. I love Call of Duty 4 and play every single night on the Xbox 360. But my love for the game doesn't mean I'm blind to a ton of problems that I think suck. Not all of these problems are the blame of the game, as several involve the people who play it, but it still counts!

Beg to differ? Did I miss additional suckiness? Let us know by posting in the comments.

Weapons Poke Through Walls

I think I'm hidden behind a wall. Suddenly, I'm under fire and, eventually, dead. How did the enemy know where I am when their UAV isn't activated? The answer comes when watching the Kill-Cam, as you suddenly witness your weapon somehow poking through solid matter, inadvertently exposing your whereabouts. For a game that allows people to shoot through walls, this is a pretty nasty bug.

A YouTube user by the name of Serpeto has created a great little video that mixes the various weapon sound-effects in Call of Duty 4 into a fast-paced techno song. The result is pretty cool:
