Netflix streaming over my Xbox is great and all, and watching television shows on Hulu has moments of convenience, but as a hardcore cinephile, I usually don’t find what I really want to watch: obscure movies my top directors, old and new, all packed onto a single site. Enter The Auteurs, which currently offers only 84 titles, but plans on bulking that to 1000 by the end of the year.
Best of all, The Auteurs is very concerned with quality and are not skimping on this front, using x264, ffmpeg, mp3box and 5.1 Dolby Surround to deliver an excellent experience. Some movies are free, some cost as much as $5. Even cooler news is that The Auteurs has access to the beloved Criterion Collection, complete with director’s cuts and DVD extras.
The Auteurs already has come wonderful selections, including Citizen Kane, Seven Samurai, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, There Will Be Blood, Rear Window….ahhh, I’m in heaven!
